Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
